Already applied? Here’s what you need to know before you enrol
You’ve applied to college, your GCSEs are behind you, and now you’re just waiting for results day on Thursday, 21st August.
College life is just around the corner, and enrolling is the first big step.
Ahead of enrolment at the RNN Group of Colleges this August, here’s a quick guide for new students to walk you through what to expect.
What will happen at enrolment?
Enrolment is more than just paperwork – it’s your official start at college.
Think of it as a mix between admin and a warm welcome. You’ll confirm your GCSE results, submit documents we need, accept your place at Rotherham, North Notts or Dearne Valley College, and be given your student ID and timetable.
It’s important to remember that the RNN Group enrolment is split into two parts: An online part and an in-person part.
What do I need to do for the online enrolment?
For the online part, you’ll be sent an email to complete it at home.
It’s a quick online form to check we have all the correct details for you. It should take about 15 minutes.
You’ll need your application identifier number (sent via email) and date of birth to log in. You should also receive an email with instructions about how to complete it, but if you get stuck at any point then just give us a call.
The online enrolment form has sections about:
- Your personal details, such as your name, address, contact number, and course you’ve applied for. Proof of ID needs to be uploaded (either a scan or photo).
- Your employment status, gender, preferred pronouns, ethnicity, and whether you have any criminal convictions. If you are aged 19 or older, you will need your National Insurance Number.
- Emergency contactdetails of a parent/guardian
- Any disabilities or learning support you’ll need while at college.
- Previous education and GCSE grade results (if completed on/after Thursday 21st August)
- Photograph upload for your college ID card – a bit like a passport photo
What about the in-person enrolment day?
Once you’ve completed the online enrolment form, you’ll be given a date and time to attend your chosen college campus to finalise your enrolment.
This is where we will double check your GCSE results and give you everything you need ready to start at college in September, such as your student ID card and lanyard, start date, timetable, plans for welcome week, and login details for our student portal and Moodle.
To keep things running smoothly, make sure you bring the right documents with you. Here’s a checklist:
- Your GCSE results (or other qualifications)
- Photo ID (passport, birth certificate, driving license)
- Method of payment for course fees(over 19s only)
- For non-British nationals or those who have lived in the UK for less than three years, you’ll also need your passport, visa, residence permit, or evidence of EU settlement status
If your course requires a DBS check, such as childcare or health and social care, you’ll also need:
List A – ONE Document:
- Passport
- Driving Licence
- Birth Certificate
- Adoption Certificate
- Biometric Residency Permit
List B – TWO Documents:
- National Insurance number
- Bank or mortgage statement dated within 3 months
- P45 / P60
- Utility Bill in your name dated within 3 months
- PIP letter in your name dated within 6 months
- Letter from headteacher at last school dated within 3 months
- National proof of age card (must carry the PASS logo)
- Marriage certificate
- Any Government letter addressed to you issued within last 12 months
- HM Forces ID card
Pro tip: Keep everything in a folder so it’s easy to access on the day. You might also prefer to bring a notepad (or get your phone’s notes app ready) to jot down key info like room numbers or tutor names.
What if I can’t make the enrolment date I’ve been given?
Life happens. If you can’t attend your assigned enrolment day, because of work or a holiday, just get in touch with the college’s admissions team. They may be able to reschedule you.
But please bear in mind that you must attend an in-person enrolment appointment. You won’t officially be an RNN student if you don’t turn up, even if you complete the online part.
What if my results are different than expected?
Don’t panic! Our Colleges are really flexible and we have a great team that will be on hand to support your next steps.
If you didn’t get the grades needed for your course, you may be offered an alternative course or a level that suits you better. And if you did better than expected, you might be able to move up to a higher level.
For students who don’t pass their English or Maths GCSEs, you will be able to resit these alongside your course.
Speak to a tutor or admissions adviser on the day. There are always options. Just be honest about how you’re feeling and ask questions. The staff are there to help, not judge.
What if I’ve changed my mind about the course?
Again, don’t panic! If you’ve had a change of heart or are having second thoughts, let staff know at enrolment. They’ll help you explore other options and help you switch to something that’s a better fit.
It’s better to be honest now than to feel stuck or unhappy later.
Will there be anyone to talk to about bursaries or financial support?
Yes! Each College campus will have a student support team on hand during enrolment. They can help you apply for:
- The 16-18 Bursary Fund
- Free college meals
- Travel passes
- Childcare support (for learners with dependent children)
If you’re planning to apply, bring any evidence of household income – like a P60, benefits letter, or recent payslips.
What happens after enrolment?
Once you’ve officially enrolled as an RNN student, you’ll be given your college ID badge (erm, hello student discount!) along with a start date and timetable.
The new academic year begins on Monday 1st September, so before you know it, you’ll be heading into induction week, meeting new friends, and starting your next chapter.
It’s normal to feel a bit nervous, but once you’re through those campus doors, you’ll start settling in fast.
Still not made your mind up?
Whether you haven’t applied for any college, or have applied elsewhere and since changed your mind, it’s not too late to apply to start a vocational course here this September.
Our three colleges are still accepting new student applications throughout August and September, so get in touch or apply online.
We will be offering a late applicant enrolment day on Saturday 30th August between 9am and 1pm with places available to book online.
Any final tips?
- Check your email and phone often in August.
- Follow your college on social media for updates.
- Ask questions if you’re unsure. Our staff are there to help.
